Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
