The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
