The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
