The Reason the Democratic Party Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This action from the DNC to suppress the publication of its own autopsy report concerning the last presidential race is shocking yet not surprising. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions more like a communications shop than a political organization committed to cultivating local power for winning elections.

A Climate That Avoids Dissent

Unwilling to break with the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has stayed within that legacy all through this past year. Making public such a report could have demonstrated whether the leadership actually want to foster open debate regarding the errors that paved the way for Donald Trump to become president again. However, the leadership is moving forward as if there is little to understand from the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: will this lead to victory? If the answer is no, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a rationale reportedly given to justify concealing the document.

Critical Problems a Report Would Have Examined

A genuine analysis worth its salt would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disengagement: The loss among millions of voters who voted for the party's candidate during the previous election was decisive in the close 2024 election.
  • The Choice to Seek Re-election: The unwavering insistence of a party leader to stay in the race, and an extremely delayed step-aside, is viewed as denying the party's base of open primaries.
  • Losing Touch With Everyday Americans: Amid economic anxiety, the electoral effort allegedly accommodating elite contributors and not managing to challenge the effects of profit-seeking.
  • The Gaza Factor: The failure to reconsider a stance concerning a major international conflict allegedly caused driving away many voters, particularly with youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Youth Support: Polling data shows a significant decrease in votes for the candidate from the youth electorate.

A Record Avoiding Accountability

Choosing secrecy is consistent with a recurring tendency of evading difficult realities. It echoes a dynamic in which nearly all elected Democrat in Congress went along with a sitting president's decision for seeking another term until a catastrophic televised debate compelled a reversal.

At the same time, large majorities of Democratic voters had been consistently telling researchers of their opposition to that candidate to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Issues

An honest autopsy might also examine matters about campaign spending, such as what sums were directed to high-priced advisors as well as ad buyers during a campaign that managed to spend a colossal sum during the general election.

A Larger Issue

At its core, the secrecy regarding the analysis points to a deference toward the existing power structure responsible for a losing electoral effort. The implication to the party's base – including millions of small donors – appears to be that they cannot have a right to see the lessons the insiders have learned from hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

A party incapable to honestly assess its own failings finds it difficult to escape the pattern that proved so advantageous to the rival party.
