Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
